How to Make Comfort Food Healthy

Cut Calories Not Flavour

Comfort foods are usually cooked with plenty of butter and oil. Traditionally, comfort foods are deep fried and can be very high in calories and fat, but it doesn't mean that if you are trying to eat healthy you have to give up on your favourite foods. You can make your classic comfort food a healthy and balanced meal with some of these simple tweaks. 

 Cut down on saturated fat

If you cut down on saturated fat it helps in improving your cholesterol level.Eat lean cut meat and trim all visible fat as much as possible. Use less oil and non-stick pans. In a good quality non-stick pan you can cook food with minimal oil. Also the plant based oils (sunflower, Canola) are classed as unsaturated fats making it heart healthy choice. 

 Add more vegetables 

Add more vegetables and to make these vegetables flavourful and delicious season them properly and stir fry or roast them. 

 Make smart choices 

Replace full fat cream cheese or yoghurt with low fat products. Also switch the whole milk with semi-skimmed.

Use low fat yoghurt in making sauce and dips and replace mayonnaise with greek yoghurt. 

 

These small tweaks and ingredients swap will turn your classic comfort food in to an instant healthy meal.
